Catwalk glitterati, fashionistas and artistes mingled at the luscious Red Rabbit Party at The Bakery in Northbridge last week. The inaugural do launched new fashion and arts magazine Ciao and guests soaked up live performances by rising house music artists. Puffs at Play co-director Nicole Van Dijken says that Perth has plenty of room for events that offer sophistication and fresh forms of entertainment.

Red Rabbit was a departure from the stylish surrounds of Level 34 and C Restaurant, moving towards the industrial, underground appeal of The Bakery warehouse on James Street in Northbridge. The cavernous venue which included two indoor rooms and an outdoor arena, was transformed into a party-goers playground with lighting, staging, artwork, curtains and props. The unusually lit backdrop set the scene for a smartly dressed crowd of some 600 people who flocked to the venue for a taste of Puffs At Play musical magic.

The essential mix of contemporary DJs included Jonno Choy (Men At Work), Steve Hogden (Men At Work), Gavin Carey aka Jazz Pimp (Men at WOrk), Stafford Beamish (Men At Work), Sammy Jordan (Lounge Lovin) and Nicolas Vautier (Sapphire Bar), who floored the guests with their progressive house and break beats style of music. These were accompanied by vocals from fiery songstress Rachel Claudio (Blue Note Tavern, Universal Bar) and jazz master Marnie Kent a.k.a. Ginger Blu (Geisha Bar, Perth Concert Hall). After the success of Level 34, Puffs at Play devotees pumped themselves up for a night of glamorous outfits, smooth and sexy house tunes and cool cocktail connotations created by savvy bar staff (lara_h, In The Mix, 9 May 2005) and they were not disappointed.

Locally produced fashion publication, Ciao Magazine, was launched at the beginning of the night whilst dance performers weaved through the crowd delighting guests. Meanwhile travel photographs by London-based artist Marie Richart provided food for thought and discussion in the chill-out room beside the main event. Sponsors for Red Rabbit included Bacardi Lion, Ciao Magazine and Darkhorse Advertising.
